Third Frontier panel OKs $175M budget

The commission that oversees Ohio's Third Frontier technology and job-creation program approved a $175 million budget for the coming fiscal year last week, but also noted that those funds will probably double next year thanks to the passage of Issue 1 and its $750 million bond issue earlier this month, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The commission also voted to approve seven new research centers around the state worth $20 million.

Lake Erie becomes site for GE's first freshwater wind farm in the U.S.

The U.S. is to see its first ever freshwater offshore wind farm, courtesy of GE and the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation, reports Fast Company.

It's the culmination of a four-year campaign by The Great Lakes Energy Development Task Force, and GE will provide wind turbines and maintenance for a 20-megawatt wind farm, with a long-term goal of 1,000 megawatts for the lake's Ohio waters within the decade.

IBM agrees to buy AT&T's Sterling Commerce for $1.4 billion

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) agreed to acquire Ohio-based Sterling Commerce from AT&T Inc. for roughly $1.4 billion in one of its largest deals in nearly three years, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The Sterling deal ranks among the highest in recent years.

Ohio leads U.S. in new employment

Ohio led the nation in April as it added 37,300 jobs, with the state unemployment rate dropping slightly to 10.9 percent from 11 percent in March, reports the Akron Beacon Journal.

Ohio, with the largest over-the-month increase in employment in the United States, was followed by Pennsylvania, which added 34,000 jobs from March to April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. New York was third with an increase of 32,700 jobs.

Ohio farmers unhappy with attack on corn sweetener

Food companies that remove high-fructose corn syrup from their products threaten the jobs of farmers in Ohio, the nation's No. 7 grower of corn, state agriculture leaders tell the Associated Press.

Some nutritionists cite the syrup as part of the country's obesity problem, though industry scientists and many dietitians say it is no more fattening than sugar.

Two Ohio legislators back bill to provide working capital to small businesses

Two state lawmakers are rolling out legislation they say could provide almost $100 million in working capital to Ohio small businesses, reports Crain's Cleveland Business.

Democratic state Reps. Jay P. Goyal of Mansfield and Nancy Garland of New Albany said during a telephone news conference that they would introduce a bill creating a small-business working capital loan program to be administered by the Ohio Department of Development.

P&G bringing 650 new jobs to Cincinnati

Procter & Gamble Co. is bringing more than 600 new jobs to its Winton Hill Business Center in Cincinnati, reports the Dayton Business Journal.

The company has decided to proceed with a consolidation of logistics and planning operations that would include roughly 300 jobs currently in Ohio but outside the city limits. The logistics center would also retain about 300 existing jobs in the city.
