UT receives grant to build algae biofuels research facility at Scott Park Campus

A research and development facility for algae biofuels soon will be built on The University of Toledo Scott Park Campus of Energy and Innovation, the university reports.

The Center for Algal Engineering Research and Commercialization will include open ponds, ponds in a greenhouse and enclosed photobioreactors to test the efficiency of different growth systems. It also will have pilot-scale capabilities of converting the algae materials grown there into fuel.

CincyTech receives $2 million in funding

CincyTech, a nonprofit venture development organization that advises and invests in high-tech start-ups, was awarded $2 million in Ohio Third Frontier funds, reports Soapbox.

The $2 million award, which CincyTech matched with $2 million that it raised, will go into CincyTech's operating budget and its Imagining Grants program, says President Bob Coy.

Local web design and marketing company Blue Kaboom has launched the Butler County mobile app, a first of its kind in the Greater Cincinnati area, reports Soapbox.

The application, developed for the Butler County Visitor's Bureau, features news, events, local attractions around the county (like EnterTRAINment Junction, Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum and Wake Nation) and hotels and restaurants.

General Assembly passes wind energy bill

A bill to give wind energy companies a tax break in Ohio has now passed the Statehouse, reports the Van Wert Times Bulletin.

In a late-night session June 3, the Ohio House passed a version of Senate Bill 232 that can be sent to Gov. Ted Strickland. Once the house vote was final, state senators passed the measure as well.

Cardinal announces intent to buy Healthcare Solutions for $517 million

Health care products distributor Cardinal Health plans to buy Healthcare Solutions Holding LLC for $517 million in cash, as it pushes to expand into specialty pharmaceutical services, reports the Associated Press.

Dublin-based Cardinal says it may pay as much as $150 million on top of the purchase price over the next three years if certain growth milestones are reached.

Philips makes $38-million investment in Cleveland

A medical imaging equipment manufacturer gas announced a $38.4-million investment in a global research and development center in Cleveland, reports the Associated Press.

Companies urged to follow new Ohio health law

Advocates for the uninsured are urging some of Ohio's biggest employers to follow a new state law that allows young adults to stay on their parents' health insurance until they turn 28, though the companies are exempt, reports the Associated Press.

The law, which takes effect July 1, makes Ohio one of the few states to exceed the extension to age 26 mandated by President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul.

Ohio courts welcome new jury rule for social media

The Ohio State Bar Association's jury instructions committee has approved a new instruction for jurors that covers electronic communications and other influences on civil and criminal trials, reports the Associated Press.

The new instruction warns jurors not to obtain any information about a case from outside sources, including a Blackberry or iPhone, or to send or receive e-mails or text messages, or go on blogs or chat rooms or social media sites like Facebook to obtain information about a trial.
