Job Description
 
hiVelocity, a weekly online magazine that covers technology, entrepreneurship and innovation across the State of Ohio, is seeking a Managing Editor to direct the publication’s coverage of the state’s new economy and steer its growth.
 
The ideal candidate will have experience writing and editing high-quality magazine-style features, a basic knowledge of economic development, innovation and technology issues as well as a willingness to learn, and passion for innovation in Ohio.
 
Additionally, the ideal candidate will have an instinct for reader-friendly tech stories, savvy for online publishing and social media, and interest in issues affecting the state. Candidates based in Columbus or Central Ohio preferred, but this is not a requirement.
 
Managing Editor responsibilities include:

• Drive the editorial vision and mission (process, standards, etc.)
• Coordinating content of hiVelocity every week
• Leading quarterly editorial meetings with your team
• Identifying, interviewing and hiring news and freelance writers as needed (contract templates and W9’s will be provided by IMG)
• Managing contracts for news and freelance writers
• Assigning feature stories
• Identifying new story ideas
• Managing and using social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter etc.)
• Editing, loading and linking feature stories, abstracts (intros)
• Editing Development news, INJ news, and In the News/Buzz sections
• Assist in oversight of special projects as applicable ("For Good" section, Jobs landed/available, projects database, blogs, Filter section, etc.)
• Final proofing of all hiVelocity issues
• Coordinating with IMG publishers and managers
• Participating in a 1-hour monthly/quarterly conference call with Executive Editor and other IMG members
• Managing a monthly budget and controlling editorial costs while working with IMG accounting team
• Managing tags and underwriting programs as needed
• Effectively re-using content from sister publications Fresh Water Cleveland and Soapbox Cincinnati (as well as occasional multi-market content from IMG)

This is a part-time, contract position that is specifically designed for freelance writers and editors (or other individuals who are interested in seeking freelance writing work). Successful ME’s understand how to effectively balance competing demands on time.
