It was a bot battle to end all bot battles when some 60 high school teams from Ohio and elsewhere descended on Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center March 25 - 27. The object? To win a game called Breakaway and an opportunity to advance from the regional event to the national FIRST Championship competition. Sponsored nationally by New Hampshire-based FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and supported regionally by the NASA Glenn Research Center, 60 teams and 1,500 students in grades 9-12 put their robots through the paces by shooting balls into a goal, climbing on towers and by lifting an alliance robot off the playing surface. The competition challenges high school students, while working with professional mentors, to design and build a competitive robot that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of students.
